Tranquillisers (Benzodiazepine) Use

If you have come to this page please be aware that there is hope…

The process of withdrawal from benzodiazepines can be painful and protracted for some people, Reconnexion’s qualified psychologists provides specialist counselling and advice to help to make this undertaking as manageable as possible.

Once through the withdrawal process, people report an overall feeling of enhanced health and wellbeing, improved memory and concentration and a greater sense of connectedness to family and friends.

Benzodiazepines (anxiety and insomnia medications)

The most commonly prescribed benzodiazepines are Xanax (Alprazolam), Valium (Diazepam), Temazepam and Serepax (Oxazepam).

Counselling sessions

Reconnexion counsellors are qualified psychologists and treat people who are experiencing anxiety, depression and other related problems in addition to the benzodiazepine or analgesic dependency.

In consultation with the doctor, a gradual reduction of the dose of the benzodiazepine or analgesic is undertaken, with encouragement and advice to support the person through withdrawal.

Counselling is viewed as a collaborative relationship where clients’ opinions and decisions are respected and encouraged.

Benzodiazepine withdrawal

The main concern about dependency on this group of drugs is the withdrawal syndrome when the drugs are cut down.

Withdrawal can vary from mild discomfort to quite severe distress. Withdrawal can be problematic due to the length of time it sometimes takes for the person to recover fully.

Additionally, many people taking these drugs for a number of months or years will experience withdrawal symptoms most of the time, even if they have not reduced the dose.

These symptoms of withdrawal are frequently attributed to other problems, and the person is unaware that his or her poor physical and mental health may be because of the long term use of the benzodiazepines.
